  15. <p>     DIED. Spark M. Matsunaga, 73, Senator from Hawaii; of
  16. prostate and bone cancer; in Toronto. Though Matsunaga was a
  17. U.S. Army lieutenant when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor,
  18. he was consigned to a Wisconsin internment camp for Japanese
  19. Americans. Later, F.D.R. ordered him and other internees freed
  20. to form the 100th Infantry Battalion, which became one of the
  21. most highly decorated military units in history. A liberal
  22. Democrat, Matsunaga served for 14 years each in the House and
  23. the Senate. In 1988 he led the Senate campaign that will bring
  24. reparations of $20,000 apiece and a formal apology to the
  25. 62,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during World War
  26. II.
