- <p> DIED. Spark M. Matsunaga, 73, Senator from Hawaii; of
- prostate and bone cancer; in Toronto. Though Matsunaga was a
- U.S. Army lieutenant when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor,
- he was consigned to a Wisconsin internment camp for Japanese
- Americans. Later, F.D.R. ordered him and other internees freed
- to form the 100th Infantry Battalion, which became one of the
- most highly decorated military units in history. A liberal
- Democrat, Matsunaga served for 14 years each in the House and
- the Senate. In 1988 he led the Senate campaign that will bring
- reparations of $20,000 apiece and a formal apology to the
- 62,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during World War
- II.
